Hi Aggies! My name is Ashley Lo and I’m a second year Economics and Political Science major. I’ve served in ASUCD since fall quarter of my freshman year, and I currently sit on the ASUCD Senate table as the chairperson of the Internal Affairs Commission.
I’m running to be the first Student Advocate of ASUCD and my goal is to serve as a non-partisan representative for students who may be involved with disputes with the university and are seeking advice.
The Student Advocate’s Office is the newest position in ASUCD, and you can think of it as a “public defender” for the student body. The role has been inspired by offices in other universities, and the purpose is to offer representation and assistance to any student or student group involved in a dispute with the university. Here are a few of my goals and priorities:
My goal is to form a staff of student caseworkers who have experience and knowledge about problems such as conduct violations, grade disputes, financial aid issues, and housing and food insecurity. The staff at the Student Advocate’s Office will offer free and confidential appointments to any student seeking advice or representation in these scenarios.
The structure of the Student Advocate’s Office will be four different divisions, with caseworkers specializing in each. Those divisions will be broken into: Academic Division, Financial Aid Division, Conduct Division, and a Grievance Division. My hope is for the office to help students resolve issues such as Registered Student Organization (RSO) violations, grade appeals, academic probation, academic conduct violations, student conduct violations, financial aid appeals, student employee concerns, emergency housing, and more.
My goal for this office is to work with other existing resources on campus such as Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs (OSSJA), the Basic Needs Center, Center for Advocacy, Resources, and Education (CARE) and more to be a great resource for students. My hope is that the Student Advocate’s Office will be a friendly and approachable office with a staff of students who want to serve their fellow peers.
I hope that you’ll vote for me as ASUCD Student Advocate!
